After the intensity that was episode 2 I don't think I will mind the lack of action and warfare in this episode. I'm interested to see how the Marines handled the getaway from hell. Looks good.

Looks like the scene where Leckie threatens to shoot Lieutenant Ivy-League is in the episode.

I'm a woman... I've watched BoB so many times I lost count and I'm loving every minute of The Pacific. I am very excited about part 3 and looking forward to the scene between Lt. Corrigan (who is becoming one of my favorites) and Leckie. It's only Tuesday and I cannot wait!

I'm still waiting for Helmet for My Pillow from amazon :(. I've started reading With the Old Breed but stopped because it doesn't cover Guadalcanal. Does it really matter which book I read first?

Is it just me or is the scene between Corrigan and Leckie way more serious than I imagined? I mean the events leading up to the scene (Leckie jumping and being dragged by.. was it a train?) and the fact that he was pissed at Ivy League for taking his cigars? The whole thing just had a little bit of a comical feel for me.

Hi Bluebell Nope, it doesn't matter in which order you read the books. You'll get a lot from each one 8-)

I'd wait to see the full episode. They could have edited it this way to make it more dramatic for the preview.

Doesn't matter which you read first but Jesus H. Christ on a Cracker, woman!

I don't know anyone who could put that book down!

Does look a bit more serious than it was in the books. Corrigan is still alive, though and I believe he denies taking the stogies, plus he probably remembers the whole incident as being much more serious! :DMaybe they're doing it from his point of view... ;)

I've only read the forwards/intro of the book not the actual words of Eugene Sledge. I didn't want to start it because I thought it would be helpful for me to follow everything chronologically. Although I love anything WW2, I'm not familiar with the the PTO compared to ETO. So don't yell at me, man!

I'M NOT YELLING!!!! :DOk, fine, read them both when you get them. I guess it would be better chronologically to read Helmet first but definitely not necessary. And if you’ve only read the forward then I’ll excuse you putting the book down, just had a picture of you halfway thru the battle of Peleliu putting the book down thinking “I want Guadalcanal, not this!”

Yeah having a loaded .45 waved in your face by a drunk Pfc (that's what Leckie was at the time right?) is much more serious.

It'll probably help you learn the names of the side characters and it'll give you great insight into what's shown on screen, but With the Old Breed is one of the greatest memoirs ever written and it's probably my favorite so I would say that if Helmet doesn't come soon forget about it and star reading With the Old Breed. Helmet is a great read but With the Old Breed affected me in ways that no other memoir has.

Unfortunately Corrigan is no longer alive. I believe he passed away in 2006.
I am delighted his interviews were included in the intros to Parts 1 & 2.
And, yes, the first time mom and I met him the first words out of his mouth were
"Mrs. Leckie, I did not steal those cigars!" By the way, at the party after the premiere
in L.A. there were "cigarette girls" dressed in 40s attire walking around giving out
chocolate cigarettes and cigars, etc. late in the evening Henry Nixon, who plays Corrigan
made his way over to where our family was camped out and handed my mom a
chocolate cigar and
said, "Mrs. Leckie, this is for you." One of the best lines all night.

Haha. I would never do that to a good book, especially books that have anything to do with military history/memoir. I would yell at myself if I did.

Oops, I got the impression that all the veteran interviews shown for the series featured men who were still with us. Sorry to hear about that...

Maybe Peachydandy can confirm this but I think they did an initial round of interviews in 2004 and then in '09 went back and did some more.

Comcast On-Demand has a new 10 or 11 minute featurette about the Battle of Guadalcanal that I watched a couple days ago and totally forgot about until this post. (Similar to the stuff in “We Stand Alone Together.”) I believe the dates given at the bottom of the screen during Hugh Corrigan’s interview clips are 1920-2005.

As Matt mentions, so far we‘ve occasionally seen “2004 interview” and “2009 interview” during the HBO-specific material. (During the R.V. Burgin profile for example.)

I think that has been on HBO.COm for a while now. Also, there's something on the HBO website called DISEASE about some of the suffering they endured as a result of mother nature. I haven't watched them all yet. Lots of content!

Haney lives!

http://www.hbo.com/#/the-pacific/cast-a ... index.html

There's a list of a ton of characters. I'm guessing bios may be added in the future for some of them. Also, Lt. Hillbilly Jones is listed as a Pfc lol.

So does anybody think that they'll put character profiles up for everyone?

Probably not… Everyone wanted one for Snafu but I think we'll be denied. I thought we’d at least get one for Corrigan and Leyden, considering they were part of the HBO interview sessions.

Why isn't Lt. Stone on the character list. I know we see him again on the airfield at Peleliu. Is “Stone” perhaps a composite character like "Manny" (also not listed)?

Someone who was part of the HBO interviews, Richard Greer, didn’t make it as a character in the mini…

The Haldane one was probably the most well done to me, the comments were all very good and the scenes were great (Phillips does go and tackle Sledge when he sees him.) I'd like to see a few more and maybe little bios of the Marines. Anyways I'm going to search the site a bit more to see if there's anything else.

It was a different format than the other ones...More bare bones. (There were no fancy graphics, no music at all, no actor or producer comments, and they let the historians speak uninterrupted for longer than usual.) If we do get more profiles, I expect them to be this type.

And yes, there is a tackle and “fight,” there, I thought we weren’t going to get that. :?

My mother and I were originally interviewed in May, 2004. At that point there
were still 5 main characters. We were brought back to L.A. in December, 2008
for more interviews. That is when we met Sid Phillips and R. V. Burgin. We also were
fortunate enough to watch the filming of what would become the opening scenes of
my dad walking up and lighting the candle in St. Mary's Church in Rutherford, NJ and
the "chance" encounter outside the church between my parents. Although somewhat
contrived, my mother is not Catholic, my father was, we were consulted beforehand,
"Would it be alright to have your mom walk into a Catholic church?" His
subsequent letters to her become a
lovely vehicle to allow him to express his innermost feelings. I only wish they had used some of
his descriptions from Helmet in these letters. The description of the darkness of the
jungle leaps to mind. "I know now why men light fires."

I just read this part today...that paragraph or two is one of the best and most heartfelt and descriptive things I have ever read.
